Financial Assistance

The Commission on Aging offers an "Unmet Needs" emergency financial assistance program. To participate in this program, an individual's income must be at 200% of the poverty level or lower. Requests are honored for emergency situations and only after all possibilities for assistance have been exhausted. Requests are honored one time only per year per client for up to $1000. Any amount over $1000 is the responsibility of the client. Some requests over $500 will require 3 bids.

 

Financial Assistance is also available for Heating Bills, Eyeglasses, Hearing Aids, BATA Passes and for Dental Programs.   Please contact the LCCOA office for information on these assistance programs.

Vouchers for Dining, Foot Care and Outdoor Home Chores

Please click on "Voucher Programs" on the menu to the left for information on vouchers that can be used for dining in restaurants around Leelanau County, vouchers for foot care and also for yard maintenance, outside window washing, snow removal and chimney cleaning.

Miscellaneous Programs
  • Tax Preparation by trained AARP personnel during February, March and April. They do not prepare schedule C, D or E.
  • Senior Project Fresh - through the collaboration of the Michigan Office of Services to Aging, Michigan State University, and the Leelanau County Commission on Aging, the LLCOA is offering free coupons for the purchase of "fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits and vegetables" from authorized farmer's markets and roadside stands to individuals 60 years and older who reside in Leelanau County.  They will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis during the period June 1, through September 30, 2011 and can be used through October 31, 2011.   The total household income cannot exceed $20,147 for a household of one, $27,214 for a household of two. 
  • Legal Services - The Commission on Aging with the assistance of volunteer attorneys recruited by the Leelanau County Probate Court is offering legal services which include the preparation of Power of Attorneys, Medical Directives, and Last Will and Testaments.  Probate Judge Larry Nelson states that it is very important for individuals to take proactive steps in these areas of estate planning to ensure that a person's wishes are fulfilled.  If you are interested in obtaining such services, and meet the income eligibility of 200% of poverty level, please contact the Commission on Aging to obtain more information on this program.
