Elmwood Fire and Rescue
Providing for the safety and protection of our customers [Click here to view full size picture] Elmwood Fire Department was formed in 1947 to provide fire protection to the residents and vistors to Elmwood Township and Grelickville.
Welcome to our site. Please feel free to look around and discover how your department has evolved over the years. If you have any suggestions to improve the site please e-mail me.
The site is divided in to information for the public and for members of the department. Please feel free to view our training schedule to find out when you can stop by and pay us a visit.
From time to time we are looking for new members to serve as firefighters, medical, or rescue personnel. The time requirement may be substantial due to the amount of training required to safely do the job.

Ray Haring, Chief [Click here to view full size picture] I would like to thank the residents of Elmwood Township and the dedicated members of this department for allowing me to serve our customers. We are a service based organization. As such we view our tax payers and visitors to the Elmwood area as our customers. Myself and the department staff are here to provide a safe and healthy place to live and visit.

Click here to view full size picture Assistant Chief Rushton comes from a history of Chiefs. His father was the original Elmwood Fire Chief. Assistant Chief Rushton came through the ranks of the fire service working every job and position the department has to offer. Assistant Chief Rushton provides for the cross over (translator) between administration and operations.

Deputy Chief Dave Tokie [Click here to view full size picture] The management structure of Elmwood Fire Department Provides for operational and administrative functions. Deputy Chief Dave Tokie has the responsibility for Fire, Medical, Rescue, and Hazardous Materials operations. Under his direction are the training, drills, equipment management, day to day activities, and all emergency response activities. All fire and EMS personnel, 4 Lieutenants, and two Captains are managed under the operations group.

Mike Whelan, Captain, Health and Safety [Click here to view full size picture] Firefighter safety and survival the is primary objective for operations at Elmwood Fire Department. To meet this objective, training and education are the key tools available. The IMS or Incident Management System was implemented over 8 years ago. Personnel Accountability is not just talked about but practiced. Our firefighters are trained to the highest level (Firefighter II) that Michigan provides. Our officers are required to meet the management training levels of Fire Officer I, II, or III, according to rank. Hazardous Materials response training was implemented far before being required by the state. Many of our medical responders are Paramedic trained. The Elmwood Fire Departmnet training, inspection, and public education personnel have been trained at, and in many cases exceed state training requirements. All of the hours of training, practice, and organization are dedicated to providing a safe community for our visitors and residents. More importantly the time is spent to protect our staff to ensure their safe return after working in a very un-safe environment.

Lieutenant Tom Britton

Lt. Tom Britton [Click here to view full size picture] Congradulations to Lt. Tom Britton. For his extraordinary efforts in the rescue of a man from a structure fire he is recognized by the Michigan State Police in a special awards ceremony.
Under heavy smoke and heat conditions Lt. Britton entered the structure, and located the victim of a home fire. After bringing the man to safety Lt. Britton returned to fight the well envolved structure fire. Thanks to Tom for a job well done.
Lt. Britton has been a firefighter for over 15 years. He currently serves as a line Lieutenant and directs the maintenance and equipment programs at the department.
