The library has served Empire, Glen Arbor, and Kasson townships since 1977. The library was first housed in anannex of the former Bolton Department Store building in Empire. In 1983, the library moved into a new facility, formerly used as the Empire Fire Hall. The overwhelming aprroval of a property tax levy in 1996 by all three townships allowed for major renovation and expansion. The new facility was completed in October 1997. Since then, thousands of new materials have been added to the library collection. In 2001, the modernization of the library continued with the completion of an electronic catalog and circulation system.

The Glen Lake Community Library provides information materials and services to all community residents on an equal, publicly funded basis. The cultivation of a rich, diverse collection of books and other reading materials is central to the role of the libray, as is the utilization of new and emerging technologies to better link people with needed information. By preserving our traditional roles while also promoting information literacy, the library strives to meet the evolving educational, intellectual and recreational needs of our community. While the library officially provides services to residents of the Glen Lake area, it is a public facility open to locals and visitors alike. The Board of Trustees, comprised of residents from all three townships, governs personnel, policy, and financial matters. Board meetings are open to the public and are held on the second Wednesday of each month.

Borrowing Materials

Residents of our service district may borrow materials from the library collection. Nonresidents are charged a one-time fee of $10.00. Families generally are registered together on a single account. Individuals may register separately, although children under age 16 must have the permissiom of a parent or guardian.

The library collection includes over 21,00 items, with more being added continually. If you don't find what you need on our shelves, the library will be happy to get it for you!

Over 13,000 titles for readers of all ages. Includes Michigan and local history resources, as well as large print editions.
Books on tape and compact disc
Nearly 800 abridged and unabridged recordings for adults and children.
Videotapes and DVD"s
Over 2000 feature films, children's movies, and documentaries.
Periodicals
Subscriptions to nearly 50 magazines and newspapers. Back issues of magazines can be borrowed.
Computer software
Programs for use on home computers.

Public Computers
High speed internet access. The Library log more than 3000 hours per year on our three public computer. During the summer, we'll need to observe our official half-hour per person time limit. Use is strictly first-come, first serve - sorry no advance reservations. If you have a laptop, though, you can take advantage of our wireless connection. Microsoft Office 2000

Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Library is a group of community-minded people organized to promote and support the Glen Lake Community Library. Friends provide support through their fundraising and volunteer efforts.
The Friends hold a used-book sale in Glen Arbor each August. In addition, quality used hardback and paperback books are for sale at the Library throughout the year. The otherr main fund-raising project of the Friends is the biennial Home Tour, featuring a variety of outstanding homes in the Glen Arbor, Empire, and Maple City areas.
Friends of the Library provide daily volunteers to assist with circulation and shelving of materials. Volunteers also assist with various special projects, from materials processing to programming.
