Cardboard: grey and corrugated - boxes must be broken down.

Aluminum: - rinsed & flattened as much as possible.  (labels can stay on)

Tin cans: - rinsed & flattened as much as possible.  (labels can stay on)

Plastics:  #1 through #7
Examples:  #1 PETE clear plastic bottles (like water bottles), #2 HDPE plastics (milk jugs, juice jugs, detergent jugs), #5 plastics (cottage cheese containers, yogurt containers, etc.), plastic bags.

Glass:  ALL Glass - Clear and colored. Rinse well.  (labels can stay on)

UNACCEPTABLE MATERIALS
Trash, wrapping paper and foil, wire hangers, scrap metal, pie tins, styrofoam and carry-out containers, broken glass, drinking glasses, mirrors, egg cartons, plastic tubs, pizza boxes, plastic shopping bags, construction debris, furniture and appliances, hazardous waste (including paint and oil) are not accepted at the recycling bins. These items can be picked up by your local trash hauler or taken to Glen's Landfill in Maple City.  Call a local scrap dealer to recycle your metal.

DO NOT leave materials at the sites when the containers are full.  DO NOT leave garbage at the sites.  When these materials are left at the sites, the county must pick up the costs for disposal and clean-up, which ultimately means higher costs to citizens.  Keep the sites CLEAN.  Thank you!

The Leelanau County programs are county-wide and established for household use for such things as:  drop-off recycling, collections for electronics recycling and collections for household hazardous waste.

Recycling drop-off sites are currently available to residents 24 hours/day, 7 days/week at these sites:  Cedar, Greilickville, Village of Suttons Bay, Peshawbestown, Lake Leelanau, Village of Northport, Village of Empire, & Leelanau Schools in Glen Arbor.
Materials Collected:   There is one bin at each site for cardboard and paper; one bin for tin and plastic, and a smaller bin for glass (clear and colored).   Plastics collected at the sites are #1 through #7.

What kind of plastic do I have?  Turn it over and look for the recycling logo on the bottom and the number inside the logo.  If it has a #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6 or #7, you can recycle it at the sites in Leelanau County.  Plastics accepted include:  water bottles, detergent bottles, fruit drink bottles, milk jugs, juice containers, yogurt containers, cottage cheese containers, sour cream containers, etc.  HOWEVER, regardless of the number, do not put motor oil containers in the bins - even if they are clean!

Rinse, and flatten materials as much as possible.  PLASTIC BAGS are accepted at the sites - please put all the bags into one plastic bag, tie tightly and place into the containers.  DO NOT put single bags in as they blow out and create problems at the sites.  The county programs are designed for household use only.

Leelanau County encourages businesses to make other arrangements for their recyclable waste (cardboard in particular) and to limit the use of the bins to household materials, only.  Business waste will not be accepted at HHW collections.
